The English modal verbs must, needn’t and ought to are used to express obligation or necessity. They are often used to give or request information about what somebody must, needn’t or ought to do. In this article we will look at the meaning and usage of must, needn’t and ought to. We will also do some comparison with the similar verbs have to and should.

The verb must is used to express strong obligation or necessity.

For example:

  • You must be at the meeting by 9 o’clock.
  • I must remember to buy some milk on the way home.
  • I must go now. I have an important meeting in half an hour.

The verb needn’t is used to express that something is not necessary.

For example:

  • You needn’t worry about the report. I’ll do it.
  • I needn’t go to the meeting. I’ve already heard what they’re going to say.

The verb ought to is used to express that something is advisable or the right thing to do.

For example:

  • You ought to see a doctor if you’re feeling that ill.
  • I ought to apologize to her. I was very rude.
