Relative pronouns are used to join two clauses together. The relative pronoun refers to an antecedent (a noun that comes before it). Here are some examples of essential and non-essential relative clauses: Essential: The student who got 100% on the test is very smart. In this sentence, the relative pronoun «who» is essential. Without it, the sentence would read: The student got 100% on the test is very smart. This sentence does not make sense. Non-Essential: The student, who got 100% on the test, is very smart. In this sentence, the relative pronoun «who» is non-essential. Without it, the sentence would read: The student, got 100% on the test, is very smart. This sentence makes sense. Here are some more examples of essential and non-essential relative clauses: Essential: I don’t know which book you are talking about. Non-Essential: The book, which you are talking about, is on the shelf.
