The first conditional is used to talk about possible present or future situations. We use the present simple after ‘if’ to talk about the present or future.

Form

If + present simple, will/can/may + infinitive without ‘to’

We can also use other modal verbs such as might, could, should or ought to instead of will/can/may.

Usage

The first conditional is used to talk about:

  • Things which are likely to happen
  • Things which are possible in the future
  • Things which we want to happen

Examples

If it rains tomorrow, I will stay at home.

If I find her address, I’ll send her an invitation.

If you come to my party, you will have a great time.

If you heat ice, it turns to water.

If you work hard, you will pass your exams.

We can also use other modal verbs such as might, could, should or ought to instead of will/can/may:

If I see her, I might give her your message.

If you see him, you could ask him to phone me.

If he arrives late, he should apologize.

If you go out tonight, you ought to be home by midnight.
