A superlative adjective is used to describe the extreme degree of a quality or characteristic. They are used when you need to say something is the most or the least of a quality or characteristic. You can use them to compare three or more people, places, or things. When using superlative adjectives, you must use the before the adjective, unless the adjective is possessive.
For example,
- She’s the best student in the class.
- This is the coldest winter I can remember.
- He’s the smartest person I know.
You can also use superlative adjectives to compare two things when you can’t decide which one is better. In this case, you use the before the adjective and of the two (or of the three, etc.) after the adjective.

When using superlative adjectives, you need to be careful of the spelling of the adjective. For one-syllable adjectives, you add -est to the end of the adjective. For example,
- big -> biggest
- small -> smallest
- tall -> tallest
For two-syllable adjectives that end in -y, you need to change the -y to -i and add -est to the end of the adjective. For example,
- happy -> happiest
- lucky -> luckiest
- pretty -> prettiest
For two-syllable adjectives that don’t end in -y, you just add -est to the end of the adjective. For example,
- quiet -> quietest
- simple -> simplest
- slim -> slimmest
For adjectives with three or more syllables, you can use the most before the adjective instead of using the -est ending. For example,
- expensive -> the most expensive
- intelligent -> the most intelligent
- popular -> the most popular
You can also use the least instead of using the -est ending to form the comparative form of the adjective. For example,
- expensive -> the least expensive
- intelligent -> the least intelligent
- popular -> the least popular
